Erasmus of Formia, or St. Elmo, is venerated as the patron saint of sailors. The phenomenon known as St. Elmo’s Fire can warn a ship's crew of an imminent lightning strike by causing a blue glow around mast tips. This glow was considered a good omen, old St. Elmo looking out.
